Vertebrates are animals with a backbone and skeleton made of bone or cartilage. Only about 5% of animals on the planet are vertebrates. Humans are vertebrates. Vertebrates live on land, in the ocean, lakes and rivers. Vertebrates are usually more intelligent than invertebrates and give birth to offspring that are larger and more fully developed than their invertebrate counterparts. Vertebrates living in the ocean, lakes and rivers have found unique and interesting ways to adapt and survive
