Nudi, nudi, nudibranchs

Nudibranchs are molluscs. They are relatives of clams, oysters, octopuses, and even the snails living in your garden, but they are unique because they do not have hard shells like their relatives. There are more than 3,000 kinds of nudibranchs. These diverse animals come in an amazing variety of colors, textures, and sizes. Even saying their name is fun! Say it with us, “Nu-Di-Brank” (the “H” is silent). Many nudibranchs have a file like organ called a radula, similar to our tongue. A radula is used to scrape off the nudibranch’s food as they inch along rocky spaces or coral reefs.
