Coral Reef Living

Coral reefs are living architecture providing homes to an incredibly diverse array of living things. When a living creature provides shelter and habitat to others it is called foundation speciation. Coral is an animal that has a symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae living in its skin tissue to help make food for it through the process of photosynthesis. In turn, the coral protects the algae by building a strong calcium carbonate cup called a calyx around the algae for protection. Coral reefs are home to animals big and small, many of which engage in partnerships. Partnerships on the reef are known as symbiotic relationships.
